WALLACE dwallace05@earthlink.net William Wallace b.1840 Fawley, England. 1848 Immigrated to NY; father John naturalized 1855; 1860 Census, working as Gardner in Tarrytown, NY. William Wallace b. Dec 1840 in Fawley (sub registration district; Exbury civil parish), New Forest (registration district), Hampshire county, England. He was 5 months old in the English census of 1841, but the age reads as 5 years with internet searches. After his father’s death 1857/8 in Chicago, ILL, William is next found in the NY 1860 Census working as a gardener in Tarrytown, NY. After that I loose him. Family lore claims there are a lot of Wallace relatives in New Hampshire and Maine, and I am wondering if William may have moved there. I am also searching for his brother Jesse/Jessy/Iefse/Jefse/Jassa, b.1842. in Fawley, England. William Wallace’s father was John Wallace, son of a noted landscape designer in England. (b. 1815 in Scotland -- m. 1838 Catharine Baker (b 1814) in St George Hanover Square, London, Eng,-- d.1856 in Chicago, IL where he was head gardener for real estate developer Sam Kerfort ) John Wallace, his wife Catharine and 5 children (Jane Wallace Calvert b 183; William b.1840; Jessy/Jesse/Iefse/Jefse/Jassa b. 1841; George b. 1845; Catharine b.1847) arrived in NY 25 Sept 1848, settling in Tarrytown on the Hudson River where he worked as a landscape designer for wealthy estates. His wife Catharine died 1848/1849 shortly after immigrating. The NY Census of 30 Aug, 1850 finds John in Mount Pleasant, Westchester County with a new wife, Elizabeth, who also died within a few years after giving birth to 2 more girls. John Wallace was naturalized by the NY Supreme court on Oct 5, 1855, when he was living in Tarrytown, Westchester County, (eastern) NY. William’s sister Jane lived with her uncle (name unknown), brother of John Wallace ( he also may have moved to NH or Maine) after the death of her father in 1857/8. Jane married Mr. Calvert, a nurseryman, in ILL. I’m wondering if anyone in your forum recognizes this family. I was told my relatives in NH/Maine have a lot of Johns, Georges, and Williams. The Wallaces in England and Scotland also had a lot of teachers.
